Best VW Tiguan Alternatives 2022
Looking for the best alternative to the popular Volkswagen Tiguan SUV? Check out our top alternatives for great performance, fuel economy and affordability.
The Volkswagen Tiguan is one of the car maker’s most popular family vehicles worldwide, and it’s not hard to see why. Its size makes it ideal for storage and a comfortable ride. Plus, VW’s striking road presence gives the Tiguan a boost over other models in the market.
However, its popularity in recent years means you might be unable to get your hands on this family SUV. That’s not helped by supply issues due to the pandemic, which is still causing havoc.
Thankfully, there are alternatives to consider that go head-to-head with this well-liked model. In this article, we explore some of the best models and compare performance, price and economy to give you more options when choosing a new car.

SEAT Ateca
As the SEAT Ateca is part of the same car manufacturing group, so it’s no surprise it comes out as a great alternative. It’s a good all-rounder, and while it doesn’t have quite the same road presence as the Tiguan – its updated look is functional and stylish.
Inside, the car has also had a refresh but essentially gives you a similar vibe to previous models. It also has a similar set-up on the dash as the Tiguan. In addition, it features a large touchscreen connecting to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard.
In the boot, you get 510 litres of space, nearly identical to the Tiguan’s 520 litres. That said, you could pay a little extra for the Ateca’s adjustable boot floor option. This makes it easier to load things into the car without hitting the back seats – plus the option of up to 1,604 litres of space.
Performance comparison
The Ateca comes in several models, which include petrol and diesel versions. The 1.5-litre petrol model offers a reasonable 150hp and steps off the mark, reaching 0-62mph in 8.5 seconds. Similarly, the Tiguan has the same engine and is available in 130hp or 150hp.
One downside is the Ateca doesn’t come in a plug-in hybrid model, which you do get with the VW.
Economy comparison
Fuel economy is ever more important with petrol and diesel prices on the up. The petrol version of the Ateca performs reasonably well with approximately 40mpg, though this is matched by the Tiguan.
Price comparison
On the whole, both cars have a similar price range depending on the model you pick. The base range of SEAT Ateca leasing deals start at an affordable £263.99 per month. In comparison, the starting cost for Tiguan is a little higher at £314.99 per month.
Hyundai Tucson
Another contender in the mid-size SUV market is the Hyundai Tucson. While it often doesn’t stand out as much as some of the other models in the same class, it does have some noteworthy points. On the exterior, there’s a large grille similar to upmarket alternatives, while the inside upholstery creates a stylish and sleek addition to the cabin.
Much like the Tiguan, the central focus on the dash is the large infotainment screen. You can also listen to music and podcasts using Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The car is generally roomy and has slightly more boot space than the VW model.
Performance comparison
The Hyundai Tucson is available in petrol, mild hybrid, a hybrid and a plug-in hybrid. This gives you a choice of specs, with the 1.6-litre engine offering 150bhp. Moving into the part-electric ranges, the plug-in hybrid model combines a 1.6-litre engine with a 66.9kW electric motor to provide 260bhp.
Economy comparison
When comparing fuel economy with the traditional petrol models, both the Tiguan and Tucson come out at around 40mpg. However, for the hybrid versions, Hyundai just pips VW to the top spot with up to 200mpg.
Price comparison
While the Hyundai Tucson may not have the same styling or presence as the VW Tiguan – it makes up for it in its affordability. Hyundai Tucson leasing deals start from £265.99 per month.

Kia Sportage
Kia has undoubtedly risen in the ranks of affordable and comfortable SUVs. The recent Sportage models have received an upgrade in design and style, with the front grille creating a commanding presence on the road.
Inside, the cabin is sleek and features metallic accents to draw your attention with the dashboard a key highlight of its high-spec interior. It features a large panel with two screens, showcasing the driver display and infotainment system.
There’s plenty of head and legroom for a relaxed ride whether you’re in the front or back, and boot space comes out above the Tiguan’s at 591 litres. Plus, you can push the seats down for up to 1,780 litres of space.
Performance comparison
Much like the VW Tiguan, the Kia Sportage is available in petrol, diesel, hybrid and plug-in hybrid. This gives you various performance specs depending on what you want out of the car. For example, the petrol models give you around 148bhp, whereas the plug-in hybrid offers 261bhp. In reality, this is similar to the Tiguan’s output in comparable models.
Economy comparison
Depending on your chosen model, the Kia Sportage ranges from around 42mpg in the petrol models to up to 260mpg in the hybrids. Although as with the Tiguan, the higher mpg hybrid options vary depending on how much you drive in electric mode.
Price comparison
The Kia range is an affordable and practical family SUV making it a great alternative to the Volkswagen Tiguan. Kia Sportage leasing deals are available from £295.99 a month, which is cheaper than others in the same class.
Nissan Qashqai
Nissan’s offering to the mid-size SUV market has proved a big hit for people looking for practically paired with comfort. As a result, recent models are donning a newer, sleeker front end.
Inside, you’ll find a simple yet stylish interior, which has had some tweaks in the recent upgrades. Alongside the Tiguan, the infotainment display takes centre stage with two screens, one for the driver display and the other for all your driver convenience systems.
Another bonus is the Qashqai is spacious, and passengers have plenty of room in the back. While the boot space is somewhat smaller than the Tiguan, it’s still ample for general family needs.
Performance comparison
The Qashqai is slightly quicker off the mark, going 0-62mph in 8.9-9.9 seconds (depending on the model). Power-wise, both cars have similar standings, as the Nissan model is available in 138hp or 156hp. The manufacturer is also due to launch a hybrid model in 2022.
Economy comparison
Again, both cars have a similar fuel economy, but the Qashqai may give you slightly more bang for your buck, with up to 45mpg.
Price comparison
The Nissan Qashqai could be the perfect solution for anyone looking for an affordable alternative to the VW Tiguan. Current leasing deals start at £234.99 a month, making this nearly £100 cheaper per month than the Tiguan (depending on specs).
