POLESTAR: Masterful design of Precept signals Polestar future
The sharply-styled Polestar Precept is designed to show off the firm’s future design direction, as well as its commitment to using more sustainable materials.
The Polestar Precept concept was unveiled back in February with its sweeping glass roof, sleek silhouette of a sporting grand tourer and striking Thor's hammer headlight design. It also features quintessential joined rear lights, reminiscent of its parent brand Volvo’s taillight design.
We now have more detailed pictures of the sharply styled concept, which aims to show off the future direction in design and Polestar’s commitment to sustainable materials.
With a wheelbase of 3.1 meters providing more head and leg room, the Polestar Precept is ideal for those longer-than-average road trips.
The striking silhouette and sloping roofline gives enough head and leg room for rear passengers, plus there’s still room for the large battery (although power output, charge times and capacities are still unknown).
The car has long sleek body lines thanks to the removal of traditional mirrors while adding cameras, sensors and flush door handles, all of which help with aerodynamics.
One of the sensors on the body that’s hidden within the roofline is the Lidar (Light Detection and Ranging), which can be used for innovative autonomy by using a pulsed laser to measure reflected light. The sensor and control systems can create a 3D representation of the road ahead and potential dangers.
Being electric-only, there is no need for aggressive grills and cuts outs to allow engine cooling. The body does have some air vents allowing for brake and battery cooling, without a serviceable internal combustion engine. The front wings are integrated into the bonnet as single clamshell design.
The airy and roomy cabin is accessed by twin barn style doors, where the occupants are washed with light from the glass roof, adding to the feeling of space on such a sleek body style.
With Polestar’s commitment to sustainability, interiors are luxurious but not encased in leather – rather, the opposite: the interior trim is vegan from a sustainable source. Using recycled materials from 100% of PET Bottles on the 3D knitted seat material can give a component reduction in weight by 50% and an overall reduction in plastic use by 80%.
The Polestar 2 runs Android OS for its infotainment system, which allows the use of Google Maps, Google Assistant and much more This technology has been carried over to the Precept concept on a 15-inch screen as the central infotainment. The dashboard has a 9-inch screen featuring eye-tracking, automatic brightness adjustment and proximity sensors, which allow the driver to change menus easily.
Polestar has said this is only a concept, allowing them to trial ideas such as surface finishes like matte and glossy, aiding aerodynamics and increased curb appeal.
